Yesterday, schools across the District celebrated Strawberries & Salad Greens Day, an annual event supported by the Healthy Schools Act of 2010 and the Farm to School Program at OSSE. With the support of their food service management companies and food service directors, this year the day was a huge success with 184 schools serving locally-sourced strawberries and salad greens to students as part of the National School Breakfast and Lunch programs. Seventy-four schools also hosted educational activities to show how these delicious fruits and vegetables are grown, as well as what other items are available seasonally in our area. Schools had the opportunity to pick up “Choose What’s in Season!” posters and display plants and stickers to help engage the children. Students were able to see, smell and touch the lettuce and strawberry plants right in the cafeteria as they chowed down on their own berries and greens from their trays.
The lettuce plants for the District-wide event were grown locally in DC by the Mighty Greens of Eastern Senior High School and the strawberry plants came through Millennial Farmers. Community-based organizations, school-based staff, food service management companies, nutrition students from local universities, and over 40 volunteers all came together to support and provide educational activities for students learning about the benefit of growing and eating local, nutritious fruits and vegetables. Kaiser Permanente also pitched in through providing the official volunteer t-shirts.
Thank you to all of those individuals and groups who put forth a great effort to make this day such a success and more importantly, a fun day for the students in DC.
