What’s On The Menu? Free Summer Meals are Nutritious and Delicious

OSSE and its DC Free Summer Meals Program partners are dedicated to not only providing meals, but also ensuring they meet the standards set forth by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Child and Adult Care Food Program  as well as the National School Lunch Program’s  meal pattern guidelines. The basic components of a summer food service program include:

  • 1% or fat free milk
  • Bread/bread alternate
  • Meat/Meat alternate
  • 2-servings of two different fruits and/or vegetables

Sponsors are strongly discouraged from serving fried foods and encouraged to serve meals that include fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. According to the USDA, a healthy, free summer meal can include delicious options such as hummus, a southwest chicken wrap, and fresh blueberries with no sugar added.

Continue to help us feed DC children and teens healthy and free meals this summer by distributing distributing the summer meals flyer (also available in Spanish), volunteering at a meal site, and by helping parents locate a site for their children.
