OSSE’s Division of Wellness and Nutrition is actively involved in promoting safe spaces in schools to decrease bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. To this end, the health education team has teamed up with the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to offer Anti-Bullying Safe Spaces Training to school-based staff. The goal of the training is to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and resources to create safe and affirming school environments for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.
The Anti-Bullying Safe Spaces Training has been a success in making better environments for LGBT students in DC schools. Chris Obermeyer, a biology and environmental science teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School, was inspired by the last training to organize a pride celebration . You can read his story here.
